Html Help Builder 4.66 released

West Wind Technologies has released version 4.66 of West Wind Html Help Builder. Help Builder produces documentation for Html Help (CHM), Web ready HTML and Word/PDF format for end user applications as well as developer documentation for FoxPro, .NET, Sql Server, Web Services and other environments. Version 4.66 adds many small user interface enhancements to the IDE and a host of new backup and project export features to Zip files. There are also a number of improvement for .NET imports including support for Code Contracts and multiple example code snippets. There are also a host of small UI improvements and a few bug fixes. Help Builder is available as shareware and registered users can download and re-install the latest version.

The next meeting of the Philadelphia VFP User Group will be Tuesday, January 10. Our speaker this month will be Bob Pierce. He will demonstrate building a small VFP project that can be used to display status info and data that is simple to build yet has a modern App/Gadget feel using just basic VFP controls and classes. If there is time he will discuss his recent adventures in bar-coding and lot control and some of the issues he ran into as well as the advantages it has delivered already and future planned enhancements.

At first glance, the BindEvent() function may seem unnecessary. After all, why bind to an event when you can just write code in the event's method? Tamar Granor will look at why BindEvent() and its cousins, the Access and Assign methods, are so valuable. Using examples drawn from real applications, we'll see how event binding lets you do things you couldn't otherwise do, and simplifies code for other tasks. We'll also talk about the difficulties involved in debugging code that uses event binding.

West Wind Web Service Proxy Generator 1.20 released

West Wind Technologies has released an update to the Web Service Proxy Generator tool which lets you easily create FoxPro clients to call complex SOAP 1.x Web Services using .NET as a service connector. The tool consists of a Wizard to generate the .NET assembly and FoxPro proxy class that makes calling Web Services as easy as calling a FoxPro method, and wwDotNetBridge which provides FoxPro helpers to call .NET code effectively without COM registration. This release updates some of the import tools used to more recent versions for greater service compatibility. There have also been many improvements to wwDotnetBridge to facilitate many FoxPro->.NET type mappings automatically. We've added automatic DataSet -> XmlAdapter mapping. You can now also provide additional parameters for WSDL.exe to be executed. The Proxy Generator is available as shareware and registered users can simply re-download for a free update.

West Wind Technologies has released version 5.60 of their Web Development framework for Visual FoxPro. Web Connecton makes it easy to build Web and distributed applications with Visual FoxPro using pure Foxo code within the Visual FoxPro IDE while optionally supporting design time integration with Visual Studio. Version 5.60 adds easier deployment to low cost ISPs via registrationless COM and self-contained file base server installs. The Web Control Framwork adds a new AutoComplete control and there are many small enhancements to various controls for cleaner rendering. The new HtmlDataGrid() helper for script pages now supports sorting. As always Web Connection 5.60 is available as shareware to try for free and it's a free update for registered users of version 5.50 and higher.

We've released version 1.8 of the West Wind Web & AJAX Toolkit for ASP.NET. The toolkit includes powerful and easy to use server side AJAX and REST services as well as a rich client side jQuery library to interact with server side code easily. The toolkit also provides many utilities including a two way databinding support, globalization, a business object layer, tools to provide logging and configuration manangement plus a plethora of utility functionality useful both in Web and desktop applications. This release adds many new features to the REST/AJAX service handlers and adds a new Entity Framework Business object framework. The toolkit is free for non-commercial use and liberally licensed for commercial use.

We are thrilled to announce that Steven Black is speaking at Southwest Fox this year. Steve Black is one of the truly outstanding speakers in our community. His sessions are lively, thought-provoking, and entertaining, a killer combination. Steve hasn?t been to SWFox since 2005 due to other commitments, so he?s been sorely missed. Steve's sessions are Looking Back: Techniques I'm Glad We Used and Niche Marketing for VFP Developers, Revisited. Both are going to be great sessions, but the Niche Marketing session is particularly timely given the state of VFP development today. Of course, this just makes the problem of deciding which sessions to attend, since we can?t possibly see them all, all the harder.
