The next meeting of the Philadelphia VFP User Group is next Tuesday, June 11 at 7:00 PM in Room 158, DeVry University, 1140 Virginia Drive, Fort Washington, PA. As usual, feel free to bring some dinner and come as early as 6:30 PM. This month, Menachem Bazian returns to continue teaching us about Php. The title of his session is ?Robust Web Application Development with PHP, CodeIgniter and MySQL.? Abstract: This session builds on topics we have covered in the past. The session will cover in detail an application written in PHP and MySQL with features including security, menus, data entry and more. MySQL plays a large role in this solution and we will spend significant time on MySQL programming as well.

West Wind Web Service Proxy Generator 1.25 for Visual FoxPro released

West Wind Technologies has released an update to the Web Service Proxy Generator, which automates the process for creating FoxPro clients to complex SOAP 1.x Web Services. The tool makes calling Web Services as easy as calling methods on a generated FoxPro proxy class. This release adds the ability to access some natively unsupported .NET types like Long and Single from FoxPro. A new HttpLogin() method has been added to the FoxPro proxy to simplify remote authentication in a more discoverable fashion. The Proxy Wizard now automatically requests Administrative Permissions from Windows UAC to run without permission failures. The Proxy Generator is available as shareware and registered users can simply re-download the registered version for a free update.

As usual, feel free to bring some dinner and come as early as 6:30. Member Bill Fitzgerald will speak on ?A VFP programmer's approach to handling data in .NET.? He says "About 6 years ago I started learning .NET and now more than 50% of my programming is done in .NET. I found some good books but most of them don't approach .NET from the point of view of a desktop database programmer and the few that do are seriously out of date. Unlike VFP which has its own built in methods for handling data, .NET is data neutral, so countless ways of handling data have emerged and continue to emerge. It took about 4 years of trial and error before I settled on an approach to handling data within .NET desktop applications that resonated somewhat with the way I did things with VFP. The approach is also applicable to web applications though my focus has been on the desktop. In this session, I?ll use a small database to demonstrate my approach to handling data in .NET/SQL Server."

Tonight Cliff Smith will show us how he created a library for MadFox using CouchDd (a NoSQL database), Couch App (an application server), and Knockout.js. We'll dig deep into how a database is setup in CouchDb, how apps are created and "pushed" to the app server, and how Knockout makes event binding in Javascript trivial. We'll also look at Rich's outfitting applications, which re-uses his Visual FoxPro tables and business objects in a modern web application (again, with Knockout). West Wind Client Tools 4.66 released

West Wind Technologies has released version 5.66 of West Wind Client Tools. Client Tools provide a host of Internet functionality to FoxPro applications including support for sending and retrieving email, rich HTTP access, FTP up and downloads as well as high level data services that allow for remote data and RPC calls over HTTP. The toolkit also contains utility classes including a simple business object layer, SQL Server access wrapper, SOAP and XML class, PDF rendering and more. This update provides a much improved JSON de-serializer, many improvements to wwDotnetBridge and a host of utility function additions.

Tamar Granor will present ?Try Thor?s Terrific Tools.? This is a reprise of the session Tamar gave in June, but with changes and additions. The VFPX project, Thor, includes dozens of tools to aid in development. In this session, we'll look at some of what Thor has to offer. The session will explore as many Thor tools as time allows, including Document View, Create Locals, Compare Objects, and much more. We'll also see how to make any Thor tool available with a keyboard shortcut. We?ll also look at how to add your own tools to Thor, how to set up preferences for Thor tools, and the Thor Updater.

We've released version 1.25 of the West Wind Web & AJAX Toolkit for ASP.NET. The toolkit includes powerful and easy to use server side AJAX and REST services as well as a rich client side jQuery library to interact with server side code easily. The toolkit also provides many utilities including a two way databinding support, globalization, a business object layer (for L2S and EFCF), tools to provide logging and configuration manangement plus a plethora of utility functionality useful both in Web and desktop applications. This release adds many new features to the REST/AJAX service handlers and adds a new Entity Framework Business object framework. The toolkit is free for non-commercial use and liberally licensed for commercial use.
